YAC's Graffiti Garbage Grab

What is the Youth Advisory Council?

Keep Pensacola Beautiful’s Youth Advisory Council is a student-lead volunteer organization. It’s an opportunity for 10th-12th grade students to take a more active role in the community. Throughout their time in YAC, they’ll develop and execute an environmentally-focused service project within the county they serve. YAC gives students hands-on learning experience in leadership, project management, and the nonprofit sector.

What is a WATERGOAT?

For starters, a WATERGOAT is a litter-prevention devise AND this year’s YAC service project! The 2020-21 council is developing a WATERGOAT model to implement into one of Pensacola’s drainage zones, or stormwater outfalls, to catch litter that has leaked into pipes from storm drains, runoff areas, etc. before hitting the headwater of a major waterway.

The WATERGOAT model utilizes floating buoys and a large net to filter out manmade debris without disturbing the ecosystem. YAC’s model will mimic Keep Tampa Beautiful’s (KTB) successful installation. As a result, KTB has seen cleaner, healthier waterways. To find out more about Keep Tampa Beautiful’s WATERGOAT, click here.

The Graffiti Garbage Grab

YAC’s goal is to raise enough money through the community donations, such as yours, to build a WATERGOAT replica. YAC plans to present their model to the city council at the end of the school year. Donations are suggested but not required.
